It seems that the Action Role-Playing Game genre is having a bit of a comeback, with the excellent Torchlight and the genre-bending Borderlands (with it’s first person shooter take on the genre) hoping to quench players thirst for loot until Diablo 3 hits.
I’m REALLY enjoying both these titles at the moment and they are both worth your money. If anyone wants to add me to their Borderlands PC friends list to play some co-op, I’m PucechanBL.
Torchlight is a traditional ARPG, streamlining the Diablo-esque gameplay to keep you killing stuff rather than managing inventory space. Borderlands however kind of revels in that inventory management, forcing you to choose which guns to keep and which you throw away. Of course it also revels in the killing of stuff, with it’s unique (except for Hellgate:London) first-person shooter gameplay showing plenty of blood, limbs, and exploding heads.
Here are a couple of videos I made to give a short taste of both games:
First 10 minutes of Borderlands (Note: The sound desyncs about half-way through but it’s not too bad)
